Betina Bordeos: lady powerlifter to compete this December

I can always hear jaws drop to the floor whenever people find out that I’m a power lifter. I’ll save the long narrative on the why’s and the how’s because that’ll take me pretty much a lifetime (yeahh, I’m just exaggerating a bit) to explain but what I will tell you now is that it’s.. for lack of a better word, tough. It takes a certain kind of discipline separate from other sports and the fact that it’s quite undermined and underrated (in our country at least) does not help. There are too many misconceptions about it and people are always misinformed about the sport so it’s great to find out that power lifters, even if not so often, get recognition for what they (or rather, we) do. I am even more elated when the ladies get the attention. Such is the case for Betina Bordeos. Betina was featured last night in AKTV because she’ll be competing in the 2011 ASIAN POWER LIFTING CHAMPIONSHIPS in Japan from December 5 – 9. I first met Betina earlier this year during my first power lifting inter-school meet. She was kind, cheery, and accommodating. The moment, however, she steps in front of the plates, she turns into some sort of amazon. It’s crazy amazing! Personally, I was awed to see her perform her bench press because girls in general have a harder time with that than with dead lifts and squats. BUT SHE KILLED ITTTT. I really am proud of her for representing the country, the sport, and all the ladies; and I wish her the best for the December competition!
